Chapter Twenty-Seven

After the little showdown with Madds in his office, he needed to get back to work. Keeping his mind on the job was a good way of not overthinking his decision to put her on leave. He knew he’d been angry, and maybe had taken it a bit farther than he should have, but in the end, the job was what mattered. And if she couldn’t do it, then she shouldn’t be on the case.

He had two agendas on his list for the day. Interview both Michael Amos and Jerry Farnham. Whatever information he garnered from them would decide his next course of action. But until that happened, he wasn’t sure really where to go. Connecting them to the altercation at the mines was his best bet. Two of the four men involved were now dead, so if his hunch was right, there might be one more body coming.

He chose Michael Amos first, seeing how he was the one first let go from the mine. If Donnie and Todd were his friends, then it would make sense that Michael might be the next target. Seeing to Michael’s safety was the most important.

The last-known address he could find, which matched the one from his employer history, was also the closest to Dupray. Of course, “close” in Dupray didn’t mean much. Anywhere was at least an hour away, especially given how the address was some rural route that led into the hills. It wasn’t too far into the Appalachians to the point he’d worry about running into those who didn’t like folks from town, but it was far enough that he needed to be cautious.

Most people who lived far out of town by themselves took their protection seriously. And a lone vehicle on their property was most likely out of the usual.

The road to the property was so rocky, it was amazing any vehicle had ever made it up that way. Lucky for him, his Jeep could handle some of the most rugged terrain. The tires splashed in a few mud puddles along the way, and even though it hadn’t rained recently, the vegetation that surrounded the road was extremely moist.

The final stretch of dirt to where he could see the top of the home was so steep, he worried about backsliding on the wet ground. His tires were new enough that he was confident the tread would hold him down. But if he felt like he needed, he would pull over and hike the rest of the way.

After a few gear shifts, he didn’t need to put the Jeep off to the side. One conveniently placed rock jutted up from the ground, letting his tire grip it enough to give him the last push to crest the hill where a lone shack sat. Beyond the shack, the road tapered off until he could see a thicket of trees.

There was absolutely nothing up here. Saying that Michael Amos was a bit of a hermit was probably an understatement.

He stepped out of the Jeep, noticing immediately that the air was much thinner at the top of the hill.
