Chapter Twelve

ZOE

I was freezing and my hair had plastered itself to the side of my face. I bolted into a sitting position, quickly realizing I was in bed, fully clothed, and lying on top of the covers. I hadn’t even remembered falling asleep. My gaze snapped to the clock on the nightstand, checking the time. Five hours had passed since I’d checked in!

Jeremy!

I grabbed my cell off the nightstand where I’d left it charging and prayed there was a call or text from someone about my brother. There wasn’t. I hadn’t missed a single call or text. Not even our aunt had reached out to see if everything was okay.

Anger simmered hot and strong through my veins.

It irked me unlike anything ever before that those who knew where I was, and what was going on, had seemed to have written off the entire situation as a stunt Jeremy was pulling instead of taking it seriously.

That was the running theme—writing it off.

Those involved here didn’t even seem to take the situation seriously. Either the gators were so vicious here and had been responsible for many disappearances, or the police and others involved didn’t want to exert themselves with thoroughly looking for Jeremy.

I wasn’t sure which was the right answer, but both pissed me off.

I ran my fingers through my knot-filled hair and then pulled it into a bun on top of my head. Next, I made my way to where my bag sat near the door and found a thick pair of socks. I hated the cold, and ever since I’d first realized Jeremy was gone, all I’d felt was chilled to the bone. I pulled on a hoodie and then slid my boots on before grabbing my phone and heading for the door. While I didn’t have a true plan mapped out, I at least had an idea as to what I needed to do next.

Renting a golf cart—preferably a cheap one—was at the top of my list. Next was getting directions to Kai’s place.

The scent of something sweet lingered in the air as I made my way downstairs to the lobby. Ellie wasn’t at the desk like I’d hoped she would be when I reached it. It only took me a moment to locate her, though. She sat in the living room, chatting with a girl who looked to be a little older than me. They were speaking to one another in hushed whispers and while I couldn’t be certain, I could’ve sworn I’d heard my name. Kai’s name, too.

I could understand why they’d be chatting about me. After all, I was probably the talk of the island still. What I didn’t understand was why they would mention Kai’s name with mine.

Unless I’d been right in thinking that he knew something about Jeremy’s disappearance.

I paused at the desk near the bottom of the stairs, hoping Ellie would notice me. She glanced my way seconds later, and so did the other girl she’d been talking to. I picked a mini candy cane from the bowl on the desk and opened it.
