Captured by the moment, she flinched when her cell phone buzzed. She read the text message: Chapel. Now. Excusing herself, she nudged her way between the pews and found Detective Ming waiting in the chapel. She closed the door behind and made sure it was locked.

“You have not returned my texts or calls,” Ming said, irritated.

“I’m leaving tomorrow evening,” Natalie replied. “Back to Joburg.”

“Addison Reynolds is no longer in need of your services?”

Natalie regretted her decision to attend the memorial after successfully avoiding Ming for the last week. “When he found out his son was missing, he held me responsible. But he does not know I was at the Farghers’ apartment that night.”

“So, you are still on the inside?” Ming asked.

“The only way to leave someone like Addison is to disappear.” Natalie pushed aside the guilt for her decision to run before finding Jack. “He sent someone else to find his son.”

“Maybe I misjudged you,” Ming said. “You convinced me of your determination.”

“My determination hasn’t changed—the circumstances have grown more dangerous.”

“Headmaster Fargher is less than forthcoming regarding his wife’s murder, and he’s denied Jack is missing. Addison Reynolds has yet to file any kind of report with the department. We have confirmed that one of the professors is still missing from the school—Professor Harley Burwick.” Ming eyed Natalie closely. “How did you know the Farghers were targets?”

Natalie had anticipated the question, but when Ming asked, it knocked her off balance. She paced across the chapel and stopped in front of a crucifix hanging on the wall. Gazing upon the depiction of surrender and salvation, she faced a crossroads.

“The man sent to find Jack is a Merikh assassin,” she said pointedly. “And I am certain he is also the same man who killed Olivia Fargher.”

“I need a name.” When Natalie didn’t answer, Ming pressed harder. “Why is Jack so important to them?”

“Honestly, I do not know.” Natalie faced Ming. “Aren’t you suspended?”

“Reinstated the night you called me from the apartment. Of course, the investigation is not related to the Merikh—officially.” Ming glanced at the locked door. “DNA was recovered inside the apartment—the same DNA found inside a BMW driven by a suspect connected to the death of my partner, Diana Yi.” Ming’s eyes narrowed as Natalie stood poker faced. “We ran the DNA through our intelligence database, as well as Interpol. No results. However, Merikh assassins are ghosts who operate in the shadows.”

Stepping away from the crucifix, Natalie sensed she was being cornered without a clear way out. Weighing what Ming had said, she knew the DNA belonged to one man. “Detective, I am leaving or else I will be the next one in the crosshairs.”

Ming pointed at the door behind them. “You are running while the dead are buried.”

She’d planned her escape to the last detail to avoid tipping her hand to Addison. Plane tickets under her real name with connecting flights she would never board. A fake American passport that cost her ten grand, which she used to purchase more plane tickets routing her to Botswana.
