Chapter Seven

“Nothing makes us so lonely as our secrets.” – Paul Tournier

Winona slept until Salt Lake City, only coming awake when the hum of Ansen’s truck faded to silence. Their conversation came back to her all at once, and she wished like hell she could just stay asleep. Facing him after what she’d revealed about her feelings… well, she’d rather run headlong into a dust storm via her grasshopper form.

But her bladder wouldn’t let her pretend to sleep any longer. She needed a bathroom break.

She blinked awake at the receding sunlight as it dropped behind a ridge of mountain. The bright lights of the overnight truck stop were already coming online and the harsh combination of the two was enough to give her an instant headache.

Groaning, she found Ansen’s gaze across the cab. His expression was unreadable, and she didn’t linger there long.

“Bathroom break?” she asked, already climbing out to stretch her legs.

“That, and you need to eat,” he answered. “How long has it been since you had an actual meal?”

She didn’t want to answer that question, so she hurried inside, disappearing into the ladies’ room.

When she caught sight of her reflection, she had to blink twice to make sure it was real. Dark circles rimmed her eyes. The top knot she’d twisted her hair into was loose and flopping to one side. And this was day two of wearing the same clothes.

She felt and looked like a bedraggled stray, but what could she do about it?

Nothing.

Outside, she found Ansen at a gas pump, topping off the tank. He was leaning casually against the side of the truck as it filled, his back to her, and she slowed down to take him in while he wasn’t looking.

She wished this was a different kind of trip. One that didn’t feel like she was approaching her doom. Maybe in an alternate reality, she and Ansen would be roadtripping for fun reasons, seeking out adventure and just enjoying each other’s company.

Of all the things she’d given up over the years, she missed spending time with him most. The easy way they’d always communicated. How they’d laugh at the same dumb things. Or even the way they could just be silent together.

She’d never known true loneliness until she lost her connection with him. But there was always friendship. And recently, there had been the shared goal of finding mate-matches for the pack.

Sadness threatened to overtake her.

Could they even stay friends after he found out the truth about Brioni? Or would she lose that too?

His head snapped around to look at her and she quickly straightened her face, shoving down the emotions choking her.

She couldn’t think about what would come of this. Only about how it would keep her brother from killing Ansen.

Winona avoided his probing gaze as she buckled into the passenger seat. Could she pretend to sleep all the way to Boise? It sounded doable.

When Ansen was behind the wheel again, she pointed him in the direction of Idaho. But he didn’t head toward the interstate.
