Having got your scenes into some kind of order, the next stage is to create chapters. At the end of the process, you should have a list of scenes within chapters in the order you want to use them. Now comes the time to add the detail.

Another Way To Outline
Successful British Thriller writer Ken Follett uses an interesting technique. He starts his outline by writing a single sentence. Then he turns the sentence into a paragraph, and keeps expanding the story until he has produced a detailed synopsis or outline. Each enlargement makes him consider the storyâs specifics in easy to manage chunks.
He might begin with:
German spy in Wartime Britain has information vital to the result of the war and must be stopped from getting it back to Berlin.
This is refined and added to. The next version might look like this:
In 1944, a ruthless German spy called Henry Fodel (known as die Nadel, âthe Needleââ because of his use of the stiletto knife to kill) is the only known enemy agent at large in Britain. He discovers that the Allied Invasion is going to be aimed at Normandy (how?) and he makes his way to Scotland, where a German submarine is waiting for him.
Keep adding to it and elaborating and you will soon end up with an outline for your novel. I found that having a rough idea of the overall story and then deciding on plot points at quite an early stage really helped me. The plot points I start out with are usually wildly different by the time Iâve finished writing the synopsis/ outline. Think of them as pins on a map that can be moved around to where they do the most good.
