Merâibah, Massah (quarrel, strife) There are two sites by this name. It is the name Moses gave to the fountain that came forth from the rock he struck after the complaints of the people [Exodus 17:1-7]. It is near Rephidim in the wilderness of the Wadi Feiran, on the western gulf of the Red Sea. In the Sinai Desert, some 80 kms. SW of Eilat.
Merâibah, waters of (quarrel, strife) This site is near Kadesh-barnea and also called âwaters of strifeâ or âwaters of provocationâ where Moses struck the rock and offended God by his impatience. Here, he stood at the close of his 40 years of desert wanderings and his outburst of anger attributed to the reason of Mosesâ failure to enter the Promised Land [Deut. 32:51; Deut. 34; Numbers 20:10-13; Psalms 81:7; Psalm 95:8; 106:32]. 90 kms. S from Beersheva in Egypt, Sinai Desert.
Meârom (height or upper waters) Lake Huleh, this triangular-shaped body of water which is presently owned and cared for by the JNF (Jewish National Fund, Keren Kayemet) is in the northern part of Israel, on a level plain in the foothills of Naphtali, touching the roots of Mr. Hermon. Most of the water in the Huleh valley had been drained in order to prevent the continued breeding of diseases and for productive farmland purposes but recently, it was reflooded in order to balance the ecology in the area. The Jordan River passes through it and here, Joshua won a great victory over the Canaanites [Joshua 11:5-8].103 kms. N from Jerusalem and 23 kms. N from the Sea of Galilee.
Meâroz (from root, cedar) This site in northern Israel is the place where Deborah laid a curse on the people by her song [Judges 5:23]. The people should have helped in the battle against Sisera but they failed to do so. It is Khirbet Marus today, some 20 kms. S of Kadesh of Naphtali. 50 kms. N from the northern tip of the Sea of Galilee. The exact site is not identifiable.
Michâmas, Michâmash, Michâmash (something hidden) Here was the great battle between Saul and the Philistines. Saul positioned 2000 men here and the other 1000 at Gibeah with his son, Jonathan. They had 30,000 foot soldiers and 6,000 horsemen encamped on this site [I Samuel 13:2, 5, 11, 16, 23, 14:5, 31]. Saul had to retreat down to the valley near Jericho but Jonathan remained and God gave him the great victory [I Samuel 14:1-14]. Here is the place where the exiles returned from captivity. [Ezra 2:27; Nehemiah 7:31; 11:31]. Presently, it is a small village in ruins, called Mukhmas on Wadi Suweinit, 20 kms. NE of Jerusalem.
Migâdal-el (tower of God) Belonging to the tribe of Naphtali, this fortified city is now Mujeidil some 20 kms. NW of Kadesh, some 70 kms. N from the northern tip of the Sea of Galilee.
Migâdol (watchtower in Canaanite language) This may have been a Canaanite military outpost and was the encampment of the children of Israel near the Red Sea. [Exodus 15:4, 22; Deut.
