Final Trip Checklist
Now that you’ve done all the right prep work, it’s time to make sure you have all your gear, permits, logistics, and “just in case” items.
One week before the trip:
Print permits, or find out where to get permits at the backcountry office.
Print the directions to the trailhead.
Arrange carpool info with trip partners. Decide who is driving, where to meet and at what time, and whether to stop for coffee, breakfast, or other items on the way to the trailhead.
Figure out how to split up the gear, if necessary. Who will carry the tent poles and stakes, for example?
Purchase food and supplies before the trip. Avoid buying supplies the night before a trip. It’s hectic to be running around on a Friday night trying to get ready, and you are more likely to forget something. Imagine the horror of backpacking without chocolate and coffee!
Share the trip plan with family or friends. In addition to the basic location and dates of your trip, let them know your itinerary, including planned campsites and trail routes. Be sure to list contact info for the park or land management agency, as well as phone numbers for anyone in your party who’s bringing a phone. Instruct your family or friends to notify the land management agency if they don’t hear from you within 24 hours after your expected return.
Two days before leaving:
Pack your gear. Again, don’t wait until the night before you leave.
One day before:
Check in with your trip partners. Is everyone ready? Are there any hiccups to be aware of before leaving?
Charge up electronics. Take a backup battery if you anticipate heavy use.
Do a last-minute weather check. While you can probably handle a little rain or cooler-than-expected temperatures, if the forecast calls for the Hurricane of the Century over the weekend, you may need to reschedule the trip.
Stage your gear for departure. Put your pack and hiking poles together. Lay out your clothes for the first day’s hike.
Refrain from drinking too much alcohol or eating spicy foods that might upset your stomach.
Set your alarm, and get a good night’s sleep. You are prepared, relaxed, and organized. You’ll do great.
