CHAPTER 21

Des knows all about cars, maybe we can ask him what it is!” said Dickson.

The three of them were back in Addie’s apartment after capturing Fluffy and making sure there were no signs they’d been downstairs in the garage.

They were still dazed from the sight of the crazy blue car.

“We can’t tell Des,” said Addie. “We can’t have Mr. Norris finding out we were there. He’d kill us.”

Marwa sighed a long, dreamy sigh.

“I wonder what it looks like when it’s out in the open.”

“I bet Des would go insane if he saw it,” said Dickson.

When Des wasn’t working at HVV, going to school, or cooking for his family at home, his favorite thing was working on his old Honda. He’d taken it apart twice, built it back together twice, but there was still a mysterious clunking sound deep in the engine that bothered him.

Addie was thinking hard.

“You know,” she said, “there’s the other car in there that I bet belongs to Mr. Norris. If it’s his, sooner or later he’s going to need somebody to check it over for him. Either he’s going to start driving again or he’ll have to sell it. What if I told Mr. Norris sometime that Des likes working on old cars. Maybe it could get Des in there and we could find out something.”

A few loud knocks came from downstairs.

Marwa’s eyes grew three sizes larger.

Addie looked at both of them.

“We put everything back down there, didn’t we?”

“Could it be Mr. Norris?” said Dickson in a whispery squeak.

Fluffy hissed under the bed.

The three of them stood in the apartment, not making a sound. Addie shoved the garage key down deep in her jeans pocket.

They waited.

“Maybe, whoever it was, they’ve gone,” whispered Addie.

Then, in the same second, the breath of all three caught in their throats as footsteps sounded on the outside stairs. Someone was coming up to the apartment.

All they could do was stare at the window of the apartment door.

Addie was dreading the sight of Mr. Norris’s long, grizzled hair and his angry black eyes. But it wasn’t him. It was a young and friendly face. Marcus Fox.

He smiled as soon as he saw them and waved.

“Who’s that?” said Dickson.

“It’s Marcus Fox,” said Addie. “Mrs. Firillo’s great- nephew.”

She went and opened the door.

“Hey! Hi,” he said. “It’s Addie, right?”

His big, bright smile showed off the whitest teeth Addie had ever seen.

“Look, I’m really sorry to bother you. I was looking for Mr. Norris. He wasn’t over at Arborvine, and they said he might be around here taking a walk.” He didn’t wait for an answer. “Hi,” he said, holding up a hand to wave to Dickson and Marwa. “I’m Marcus Fox. I’m related to Patsy Firillo, and I met Mr. Norris the other day at brunch. I was hoping I could catch up with him to learn more about the history of this place.”

“I’m Marwa.” Marwa beamed up at him with stars in her eyes.

Dickson played it cool and professional.

“I’m Dickson. I can probably tell you some stuff about the place.
