Preschool Children This is a prime age for learning about Passover. From age three to six, children will feel the anticipation and notice how the seder table is different from a regular dinner table—or even a Shabbat table.

In a way, the seder really is geared to the preschool mind. The Four Questions in the haggadah are, developmentally speaking, questions that might be asked by a preschool child who is still learning the basics. (By the time a child is seven, he or she will know the answer to the question “Why do we eat matzah tonight?”) Preschoolers who delight in imaginative play and pretend can enter the story of the Exodus wholeheartedly through dramatics, puppets, and the like, which are great ways to keep them engaged and at the table.

Try to get young children to nap in the afternoon with the promise they can stay up as late as they wish; and if they conk out in the living room while the adults finish the seder, that’s fine, too. It makes a great picture and a sweet memory.
