Take a look at that upper left box—the influential people who are not yet pulling for you. Is it because you haven’t stepped up to get to know them? Often, those influential people seem unapproachable, intimidating. Maybe the gossip about them has colored your view. One senior woman told us that she avoided working with a certain senior executive early in her career because of what she had heard. When she ignored it and approached him, she found it was fun to work together. Eventually, he became one of her most important sponsors, a relationship that lasted many years. Remember that what you hear in the hallway is not always true. And even if it is, it may not be true for you.

As you look at your network design, draw your own conclusions. How balanced is it? Where do you need to invest? And is it time to go out into the world and find more people to get to know?
