“Quinn, if you’re asking me to forgive Eric just so you can get laid—don’t hold your breath.”

“Okay, that is not fair,” said Quinn, twisting her hands. “I’m not asking you to forgive Eric, I’m just asking you to, y’know, put him out of his misery, gently, like a lame horse. Or Old Yeller.”

I exhaled, shaking my head as I dug in my purse for a folded-up piece of paper. “No way.”

“That’s okay,” she said stonily, snatching the paper from my hand. “It’s not your fault. I know you’d have more empathy if you were getting laid. I mean, what are you and Tyler even waiting for, the second coming?” Quinn unfolded the paper. “What’s this?”

“This is what I wanted to show you,” I said, scrambling behind her to look at the picture over her shoulder.

“Okay. Who are the McHotties in the drip?”

“That’s my dad having dinner at a charity function with Aleksandr’s dad, Andrey Vitali.”

“Holy shit, Aaliyah, you did it—you found the link. So? Are you satisfied?”

I shook my head.

“Of course not, and once again, no one can blame you.”

Then Quinn proceeded to tear up the paper it had taken me hours of research to find.

“Hey, what are you doing!” I demanded, following her into the bathroom stall and watching her toss the shredded remains in the toilet and flush.

“Aaliyah, it wouldn’t do you any good for someone to find out your dad rubs elbows with guys like Andrey and Aleksandr Vitali. And I really think the more you keep digging, the less you’re gonna like what you find.”

“You think I don’t know that? But Q, if Aleksandr is using me, I have to know why. At least this proves that it’s about more than just the money Tyler’s dad owes him. It’s about me too.”

When had Aleksandr figured out our parents were connected? As soon as he met me? Before? After? Was it a surprise to him as well, or had he known all along? I had so many questions, but there was only one that kept me up at night. Aleksandr had said he needed me to be strong—to what end?

Quinn and I both jumped when one of the bathroom stalls opened. Daniela sauntered up to the bank of mirrors.

We watched her outline her evil smile in red as her reflection smirked back at us.

“Everything’s always about you, Aaliyah.” Daniela swiveled to face me, popping her lipstick back in her Coach bag. “But if this is your show, and you’re the star, I’ll be happy to play the villain.”

Stupefied, Quinn and I watched Daniela flounce from the bathroom.

I winced. “How much do you think she heard?”

“Take a wild guess,” said Quinn, throwing her hands in the air.

That weekend, with his parents getting drunk at a conference in Aspen, Declan threw open the doors to his family’s lake house. I used GPS to navigate the winding roads through Gentle Forest. Chinara and Jared were in the back seat, and we all sang along to the hits on the radio.
