CHAPTER
32
John wrote another report for Jeannie and then downloaded the pictures onto a CD. When he finished, he told Stella about his early morning adventure with Dave.
âWhat? Youâre lucky you werenât killed!â
Stella was upset.
âLook, I know you want to help, but donât you think itâs getting a little crazy, now?â
She paused a moment.
âI take it you havenât called Jeannie, have you?â
âNo; I wanted you to hear it from me, rather than hearing me tell her over the phone.â
Stella stared at John.
âIâm worried,â she finally said.
âIâm hoping the license plate number will expedite things.â
âAnd what if it doesnât? What happens if the license plate is bogus? What then?â
âI would hope that the Police Department will hold up Sergeant Broderâs retirement and persuade him to ask Michelle to come in voluntarily. It may be the only way to flush out this guy.â
âAnd if Michelle doesnât agree?â
âShe has nothing to lose; itâs a win-win situation for her. But, I think thereâs a way to sweeten the offer.â
âWhat is that?â
âI need to search her house againâ
âIn spite of what happened youâre not going to quit, are you?â Stella finally asked.
John didnât answer. He didnât have to; Stella knew the answer.
âAll right, John. Just promise me youâll be careful.â
âI will.â
John placed his report and the CD into a manila envelope and then called Jeannie. They agreed to meet inside the Princess Anne Post Office at 2:00 p.m.

Jeannie was ten minutes late.
âSorry, John; I was just about to head out the door when I ran into Sergeant Gonzales. I said to him, âGonzo, if you watched the various news broadcasts on television each day you wouldnât have to read about it a month later.â I got a quizzical look from him so I pointed to the magazines he was holding. He laughed and then he told me that the magazines were for a marketing class he was enrolled in at Virginia Beach Community College. They were learning how advertisements are written to entice people to buy a companyâs product.â
âWell, that explains the other day,â John said.
âYes, it does. What do you have for me?â
He briefly recapped the incident and told her what was in the envelope.
âIâm ready to go back to Michelleâs house whenever you have some free time.â
âMeet me there on Friday at 10 oâclock.â
