Leaving the notes might have been a bad idea. Especially since Trick hadn’t heeded them anyway.

Henrietta Rowlins might. She’d been obviously shaken. And earlier tonight when she’d walked into the bar...

She’d realized the mistake she’d made.

But it was too late.

And it was too late to get that note back from her. Not that it mattered, since the only fingerprints on it would be Ms. Rowlins’s. The earlier notes, though, the ones left for Trick...

Those might have prints on them because emotion had been overruling self-preservation then. So those notes had to be destroyed. Where the hell had Trick put them?

He obviously hadn’t reported them to the police yet, because they would have tested them for prints. The notes had to be disposed of before Trick turned them over to the authorities. Had he given them to his brother-in-law?

If he had, Zimmer probably would have turned them over to the police. Or his wife...

No. The notes had to be somewhere at Trick’s place. And after the shooting, he wasn’t there. This was the perfect opportunity to search it. Hence, the impromptu visit to the apartment. The police hadn’t released the crime scene yet, but they weren’t guarding it either. While there was a lock at the door, the windows weren’t secured beyond some hastily tacked up pieces of plywood.

One of those came loose easily enough—enough to slip inside and begin searching. But the search had just begun when footsteps echoed in the stairwell outside the apartment door.

Somebody was coming.

The flashlight flipped off, but before it could get shoved into a pocket, it slipped and tumbled onto the hardwood floor. But then the gun came out, clasped tightly—finger near the trigger.

Whoever was coming was going to get a hell of a surprise—in a bullet...
