Then he made me go outside and play handball with him against the garage door until I could hit the ball “without looking like a spaz” is how he put it. He even taught me a couple hotdogger moves.

So when lunch recess came around today, I led Jack and Bee and Danny and a few other hangers-on* over to the big brick wall and pulled the blue ball from my pocket.

“Lemme show ya how it’s done,” I said, and I proceeded to teach the gang how to handball.

“You’re awesome, Aldo!” said Bee after we’d played for a while and I’d nailed a perfect headsie*

Yeah, I think my hotdogger genes are finally kicking in, I said. Not like it’s a big deal or anything.”

On the walk home from school, I stopped at Jack’s dad-house with Jack because he wanted to show me his new hematite rocks. What can I say. That’s just how good of a friend I am.

So there we were, admiring a handful of lovely black pebbles. Jack’s dad (his name is Fritz; he’s a fireman) was making us after-school peanut butter sandwiches.

“I hear your family’s going skiing this weekend,” said Fritz. “Sounds fun.”
