Chapter Seven
Margot
I arrive almost two hours late for work, but to be fair, Camden dropped me off at my car an hour after our work day started. To save time, I brought bagel sandwiches and coffee as a late breakfast, an early lunch for us. Except, when I got to my temporary desk, I found Camdenâs door closed and his calendar clear starting at two. I could have sworn he had a three and a four oâclock today.
After hours of silence, his door remaining shut, Camden walks off the elevator.
âI thought you were in your office.â
He shakes his head, takes my hand, and pulls me to my feet. With little regard as to who might walk in on us, Camden pulls me into his arms and kisses me tenderly. âLetâs grab a bite.â
âI brought you a sandwich and coffee, but now theyâre cold.â
âDid you notice my calendar?â He slides his finger down my cheek, staring into my eyes. There is a subtle seriousness to him, different from the stress I noticed yesterday, but lacking his normal joviality.
âYou cleared your afternoon.â
âRight. So, letâs grab a bite.â
âWhatever you say, boss.â I wink at him and kiss his chin.
âIâm not your boss. Not really. You donât have to do what I say.â He links his fingers with mine and brings my hand up to his lips. âBut I like it when you do.â
We drive downtown, and Iâm half suspecting heâs going to take me back to his condo for a little afternoon delight. I donât call him on it because I wouldnât mind starting our weekend early. Iâm hoping we spend most of it in bed, considering how much I enjoyed last night.
He pulls into the garage under the courthouse, next door to a tapas restaurant, as well as a steak house and sushi bar. But why would he park here when there was valet parking at the steak house? âWhere are we going?â
Camden parks the car and then slides his hand off my thigh to open the glove box, pulling out a small velvet box. âYou have two choices, Margot, and although I know which one I prefer, neither choice is wrong.â
My gaze tracks the box and then locks onto Camdenâs golden brown eyes. âWhat are my choices?â
âWe grab a bite, or we go upstairs and get married.â He pops open the box to reveal the most beautiful ring Iâve ever seen. Itâs vintage, or at least it appears to be with its beautiful canary yellow princess cut diamond surrounded by pave diamonds and gold filigree.
âOh, my god. Youâre serious?â
âWhen I asked you to marry me last night, you said yes. Have you changed your mind?â
âNo, I havenât changed my mind, butâ¦â I clutch his bicep to ground myself, my brain buzzing and body tingling as if Iâm floating in a sensory deprivation tank.
He pulls my hand from his arm and slides the ring on my finger before bringing my hand to his mouth. âMarry me, Margot. Make me happy and be my wife.
