Clyde rushed down from P.E. to put the soufflés in about ten minutes before lunch. We were bustling around, busy at the last moment, and I didn’t even think of the soufflés until the lunch bell rang and the students started lining up. I looked back and saw Clyde pulling the trays of soufflés out of the oven.

“They disappeared,” he said, surprised.

I went over. There was just a thin black film in the bottom of each custard cup.

“What happened?” asked Cassie, coming over.

“Don’t know,” Clyde said. “I made goo.”

“How does it taste?” asked Cassie.

Clyde dipped a finger in. “I made bad goo,” he said.

“Great,” I said, going back over to the serving table. “No dessert!” I announced to the line of students. An audible wave of disappointment passed through them. More than half of the people waiting in line just walked away. Cassie and Dina and I took our positions behind the serving table.

After serving the first few students, I heard a thump, and I looked back and saw that Clyde had plopped down on the floor in front of the ovens. He put his face in his hands. I nudged Cassie, motioned toward Clyde.

“Uh-oh,” she said quietly. “He’s broken.”

But later, I glanced back again. Clyde was back in his corner, his little pastry chef corner, and he had three cookbooks propped up around him, and he was writing furiously in a notebook.
