Chapter Six

McKenna

I must fall asleep against him, because when I wake up sometime later, it takes me a second to realize where I am and what it was that woke me up.

Silence. No wind, no rain, no one else’s breathing.

The space beside me is empty, but I hear footsteps echoing on the metal stairs way up near the top of the lighthouse. Sitting, I press on the wound; it’s feeling much better. I’m definitely up for a climb.

I’m panting by the time I reach the top of the ten-story climb, so I pause to catch my breath before pushing on the heavy wooden door. It opens with a groan onto a metal balcony that wraps around the lighthouse, giving a three-hundred-and-sixty-degree view of the coastline. There’s another level up that leads to the light itself, but it’s been out of use for decades. Usually, this balcony is full of tourists—parents wanting to give their kids a new experience, and kids complaining with every step they climb until they emerge out here and get a load of the view.

I step out onto the balcony and take a deep breath. Beach air has a certain smell to it—fishy and salty, but fresh. There’s no mistaking where we are.

Channing materializes out of the shadows beside me. “Is it over?”

I shake my head. “It’s the eye of the storm. It’s only halfway through.” I make my way to the western side of the balcony and search for the mainland, but it’s dark. They’ve probably lost power. Channing comes up behind me and puts his hand on my arm like he’s afraid I might tip over. Honestly, given my track record with him, it’s a distinct possibility. So, I let him. Also, it feels nice. Just like sleeping beside him did. And holding his hand. And kissing him. I wouldn’t mind doing that part again, though I could do without the gaping flesh wound.

“How long will it last?” he asks, clearly unaware of my train of thought.

I shrug. “A few minutes. It’s nice, isn’t it? Mother Nature’s little intermission.”

He tilts his head back and looks up at the stars. “You know, I’ve seen these stars from every corner of the world, but they seem especially bright right here.”

I raise my eyebrows at him, edging my way back to the door. “Well, who knows, maybe it’s just because you’ve finally found home.”

He’s looking at me when he says, “Yeah, maybe I have.”

Heat creeps up my face that has nothing to do with the warm night air. “Come on,” I tell him. “We should get down from here before the storm starts again.”

“Right.” He holds open the door for me. “Don’t want you to get hurt.”

When I toss a glare at him over my shoulder, he’s smiling. It’s a nice look on him. It changes his face, softens him just a smidgen. Makes him look like a real person and not the god of the sea.

Triton.

What are the odds, really? Luckily, he didn’t seem to know who Scuttle was, which isn’t surprising.
