A few months later, Leidy (1856b) noted two vertebrae and a phalanx from “some huge animal,” possibly mammalian, but “most likely Deinosaurian” also recovered by Hayden, but from South Dakota in beds supposedly dating from the Miocene. Leidy called the animal Thespesius occidentalis “western wondrous one” (from Greek thespesios “wondrous, marvelous” and Latin occidentalis “western”), alluding to its great size without committing to its exact identity (mammal or reptile).
