Chapter 11

Jack

I groaned. I lay on my back afraid to move for several seconds. Once I had stopped falling, I didn’t want to cause myself to go sliding further. The wind had been knocked out of me, but more than that, I was fine. Except for feeling like a total dumbass. I waited for my adrenaline to settle down so I could see if I was in any pain anywhere.

I took several deep breaths. My right knee burned and the cool air stinging my skin told me I ripped my pants. I lifted my head tentatively to look at my leg. Sure enough, the pants had ripped and there was blood on my knee. I relaxed my head back into the leaves. I was definitely going to need a shower.

Above, William called my name.

Oh God, so embarrassing. How was I going to explain that I just tripped and fell over the edge because of the sweet tiny fawn?

Scared to death by baby Bambi.

If Ford ever found out about this, I would never hear the end of it.

I started to shift, but the less my heart raced, the more my other ankle hurt. Shit.

A few moments later, William was at my side. His eyes were wide, brows furrowed and his color was pale.

“Jack,” he said my name on an exhale when he slid to a stop above me. He held on to a sapling to keep from sliding. “Are you okay?”

“Yes,” I said.

His eyes moved up and down my body. “You’re bleeding. How’s your neck? Do we need to get an airlift?”

I moved to sit up. “No. I’m fine. I mean. Except the bleeding. And maybe my ankle. Definitely pride.”

William crouched down to wrap his arm around my waist and helped me scoot up. “On a scale of one to ten, what is this embarrassment level? One being somewhere around saying ‘you too’ to a server who tells you to have a good meal. And ten being having a panic attack at a drag show and having a sexy stranger having to help you.”

Haloed in the light, standing tall above me, he looked like my own personal superhero.

“Well, when you put it that way, a solid five,” I said.

“You’re gonna be fine.”

We shared a smile as he lifted me to my feet.

“Go slow. The second something hurts, tell me.”

I nodded and leaned into him maybe a little more than I needed to. Having his strong arms lift most of my body weight was nice and I really wasn’t as bad as I—

“Oh ow, ow, shit,” I gasped out.

“Your ankle?”

I winced and nodded as I tried to put more weight on it.

“Do you think you broke it?” he asked tightly.

“No. I think I would be screaming if it were broken.”

“Hmm,” he said and lowered me back to the ground.

I should insist that I’m fine but honestly his fussing over me felt nice. Selfishly I wanted to be the center of attention always in his life.

I shook away that wild thought.

“Let me look at it?” he asked but was already untying the laces of my boot.
