I had to assume that since Brad had known where to find me, that my shithole apartment was under observation. Tony didn’t have that large of an organization or that many people on his payroll. However, he was also unafraid to bring in outside help when he had an operation planned.

Which was how he’d hired me in the first place. I was distraction for the mark, part of a long con. Had to put up with that asshole pawing me for an entire week, after Tony had “examined the goods” himself. Multiple times.

However, a cool million was on the line as my share. I was willing to put up with a lot for that sort of cash.

Then the mark let slip that it wasn’t merely a few million that he had stashed away. It was closer to a billion.

Had Tony not done his research? Or had he lied to the rest of us about how much was actually on the line?

Those dollar signs made me greedy.

Should have occurred to me that the mark was also exaggerating about the size of his bank account. (No man was actually as wide or long or big as he thought he was.)

Didn’t take a lot of finagling to get the passwords to his account. Fool was far too trusting. Honestly, I was surprised that he hadn’t been taken for all he was worth before then.

Of course, it wasn’t that easy to get at the cash. He wasn’t completely stupid—he’d set up blocks on his accounts so I couldn’t do a wire transfer. No, I had to actually go into the bank, with someone impersonating him, in order to get at all that dough.

In that, Tony had been smart. He’d known that just the passwords weren’t enough, that I’d need help and a bigger team to pull off the full robbery.

In retrospect, I should have assumed that Tony would have me followed as I met Jason (a friend-like brother-with-benefits) with account numbers, passwords, ID and debit cards in my greedy hands. Jason made a passable facsimile of the mark, what with the fake beard, expensive suit, and prosthetics that made him gave him an extra twenty pounds.

We were only halfway through the transaction, sitting in the bank manager’s office, when the cops got alerted that something was going down. Tony had probably clued them in. Or the mark had wised up.

I got out—was actually in the restroom when the big bads arrived, so I was able to slip out the door before they snatched me up.

Jason was still inside. They’d charged him with identity theft. Hadn’t been able to make the bail money. They weren’t able to make anything else stick, though, as he’d been caught before he’d actually withdrawn the money. (Stupid of the cops to interrupt the crime in the process, instead of waiting until we’d completed the job. Then again, Washington State PD don’t have a reputation for brilliance, just brutality.)

And now, Tony was after me for messing up his con, when I had been the one putting up with everything for just a fraction of final payday.
