She should have been more candid with Janecke. He might have concluded that she’d botched the sequencing, or that she was crazy. Or he might have accepted her findings and run around with his hair on fire. She didn’t want that. Even at Cold Spring, hair on fire would draw attention. And she sure didn’t want attention. Not yet. Not when any of a hundred people with big reputations could elbow her aside on this project.

It probably wouldn’t come to that. Chiquita would be just another of nature’s freaks, soon to be indexed and forgotten.

But this freak was more interesting than anything she had found in mustard plants.
