Chapter Three

“Tell me you didn’t drive.” Pike turned to Zack after the ambulance had departed taking Mr. Millsap and all Mrs. Millsap’s hopes. That could be me. He was still so pissed. So scared. So…something that Zack was injured and hadn’t told him.

“It’s my left foot and left arm and I’m—”

“Fine. I know.” Reluctantly, Pike followed him to the truck. Going home in a cab in a fit of frustration held certain appeal, but the competing urge to not let Zack out of his sight won out. But that didn’t mean he talked on the way back to the house.

Sure enough, Zack drove competently enough through the quiet streets. Because of course he did. He wasn’t the type to let as whole laundry list of ailments slow him down.

“Fuck. I need a shower.” Zack sounded so tired as he parked the truck next to Pike’s car that some of Pike’s ire faded.

“I can help you. Is the arm broken?” Pike pushed aside all the conversations they needed to have. It wasn’t what Zack needed right then as he fumbled with the keys for the door.

“No. Not the arm. Busted my collarbone and a mild shoulder sprain. Sling is just so I remember not to use it. And I don’t need help showering. I’m—”

“You say fine again and I’m going to whip you with a towel,” Pike threatened as he flipped on lights on the way to the hall.”

Gizmo, cone of shame and all, wandered out into the living room, giving a mighty yowl.

“What happened to him?” Groaning, Zack bent to greet the cat.

“Abscess. Lost his dignity with all the shaving and a chunk of my bank account, but he’ll be—”

“Fine.” Zack shook his head, bitterness lacing his words. “Anything else you didn’t tell me? Lightening strike the house? Your mom okay?”

“Mom is fine. And we’ve got a new dishwasher, but you don’t need to worry about that.”

“Of course not. Listen. I can’t…I just can’t deal with all this. I’m going to shower. After, we can talk.”

That sounded awfully damn ominous, but Pike just nodded and threw himself onto the couch as he waited for Zack to encounter the mess in the hall and start a fresh round of bitching, but nothing came. Guess he wasn’t kidding about not wanting to deal with more arguing. Another few moments and the shower kicked on with the rattle that Pike still hadn’t managed to fix. Fuck. I suck.

Forcing himself to move, he headed to the kitchen. Zack probably hadn’t eaten in hours. He fished out a bottle of Zack’s brand of beer that he’d bought last week in anticipation of the homecoming and made up three sandwiches as best he could one handed.

“That for me?” Zack wandered in wearing nothing but a towel, limp less pronounced now. Pike was torn between wanting to categorize all the bruises on his torso and marveling at how three months had somehow chiseled him even further, made his abs more defined and biceps bigger.

“Yeah.” Pike handed him a plate and headed to the table.
