Everything around her was white. Sharp, painful, bright, white. The harshness of this new place that Brown Fur had taken her to hurt her eyes and made her head ache.
The only saving grace was that the beings that murdered her sister were gone. But as these new figures in white coats lifted her forelegs high, spread her paws, and shone false suns in her eyes, she wished theyâd come back and finish the job like they did with her family.
Soon the humans were done with her and, all together, lifted her from the cold not-ground surface, and took her to another place. Little One didnât fight this time, too overwhelmed to even consider it. But she knew she should have. A wolf should never stop fighting or allow themselves to be trapped. Thatâs what her mother always told her. But her motherâs words meant nothing now. A wolf was never to be alone either, yet she was. Alone with creatures whose eyes and features looked too similar to her own. So she surrendered and took in the small world around her.
Strange wooden logs filled this new area, most with white ice sheets on top of them. A few humans sat at these logs, watching her briefly before going back to staring at a silver boxed shaped⦠thing. It was the cage in front of them that then drew Little Oneâs attention. Its grey bars were just like the cage she had been kept in before, but much larger in comparison as the bars went all the way up to the white sky of the Den. The cage stood out from most of the room, almost as if it shouldnât belong there. Just like Little One.
Locked behind the solid bars, Little One looked at the humans who watched her. Their voices excited and joyous as they spoke to one another, pointing and scratching with small sticks on these white squares in their paws as they studied her.
Seeing their joy, she turned away in disgust, trying to hold back a snarl of anger. Somewhere, far away, back home where she belonged, her pack would be in mourning. She had lost her home, her sister, and yet these monsters who had taken so much from them dared to smile and celebrate?
As a wolf, she was taught to be patient and wait for the right moment to strike. Little One had never been successful with this, her nature too curious to allow for it. Now, as she watched the monsters in front of her, she knew this was the time.
Mother always said, patience is the wolfâs virtue, Little One thought, her eyes tracking every action of her captors. It is time I learnt that.
