ROCKIN’ RECIPES

RAMEN NOODLES ARE HELL. They are like cardboard in water with chunks of confetti that are supposed to be veggies. When I was sixteen, at a friend’s place, as usual it was all we had to eat. Nick tried to convince me he was a gourmet chef and that the trick to making them better was to use 50 percent water 50 percent beer and flavor them with cinnamon. I honestly don’t remember the outcome (who knows; maybe I blocked it for a reason), but the point is, that’s how I learned to cook. I’ve never had a formal lesson. Today in my fridge you are more apt to find strange condiments from my travels: dried ume from Japan, Jamaican rum runner sauce from Germany, instant white sauce mix from the U.K … . you get the idea. My own recipes usually have evolved from sheer trial and error. On the following pages, you’ll see how instant pancake mix and tomatoes DO go together.

I decided to reach out to my friends and ask them for their vegetarian recipes. Some of my friends told funny stories, and some have nontraditional means of measuring and explaining things, which make these all the more fun. Why only veggie recipes? Well, I’m personally veggie and, honestly, at the end of the day, veggies are cheaper than meat when you’re on a budget.

So enjoy the next few pages. Some recipes are superhealthy and require a stove; some are perfect for late-night munchies.
