Tressa was in a little park around the corner from Lindseyâs townhouse. It was Easter Sunday, and it had been fifteen days since she had spoken to her lover. Lindsey had called her many times, but Tressa couldnât bring herself to answer the telephone. A few days ago, the calls had finally stopped.
âIâm an idiot,â Tressa scolded herself, standing and heading for her car. âI havenât spoken to the love of my life in over two weeks because fifteen years ago she made out with another girl.â
Passersby looked at her curiously. She climbed into her car and drove over to the townhouse.
She let herself in with the key Lindsey had given her. She hoped Lindsey was sleeping in, but when she found Rufus and Ziggy glaring at her, she knew their mistress was awake. She also heard shuffling noises in the kitchen.
Swallowing her pride, Tressa walked into the kitchen. She wasnât prepared for what she saw there. Lindsey was dressed in her normal morning outfit of sweatpants and a ratty old T-shirt, holding a plate with a huge, fluorescent pink blob on it. âThat looks disgusting,â Tressa said dryly. Lindsey jumped at the sound of her voice.
The hesitant, wary look in her eyes tugged at Tressaâs heart. âWhat is that?â She closed the distance between them, still not certain that her presence was welcome.
âItâs a Peep,â Lindsey explained. âIf you put them in the microwave, they get really big.â
âThereâs something wrong with you,â Tressa said, looking at the blob in disgust. âDo you still bite the heads off those things before you eat them?â
âItâs the only way to enjoy Peeps,â Lindsey said, putting the plate down and climbing up on the kitchen counter.
âHow can you eat those things?â Tressa said, grimacing. âTheyâre nothing but sugar.â
âWhatâs your point?â Lindsey spoke from her perch on the counter.
Tressa leaned against the counter, keeping a slight distance from Lindsey. She could see hurt and confusion in Lindseyâs eyes. âIâm sorry,â Tressa said softly. âI donât know why it got to me the way it did. Iâve missed you.â
âAll you had to do was call or come over,â Lindsey said. âAre you ready to talk?â Tressa nodded, chewing on her bottom lip nervously. âTressa, I love you,â Lindsey continued. âA very long time ago I made a mistake and then lied about it. I was young and stupid, and at the time I thought it was the right thing to do. Iâm telling you the truth now. I made out with Bethany. But I never betrayed you, ever,â she said firmly. âIf she was still speaking to me, Iâd call her right now so she could tell you herself.â
âWhy isnât she speaking to you?â Tressa inquired.
âShe stopped talking to me that night because I wouldnât do anything but kiss her,â Lindsey replied, shrugging. âIn fact, I had to walk home. She kicked me out of her car.â
âJerk,â Tressa grunted. âNot her, me,â she added. âI canât believe I made such a huge hairy deal out of something that happened when we were in high school.
