Chapter 7
When I arrived home, I knew something was wrong. With a house full of boys, quiet often equaled trouble. With long strides, I headed to the heart of the house, the kitchen. Every afternoon, I would find the refrigerator and the cabinets ransacked. Three growing boys kept me making trips to the grocery store. But recently, Iâd been skipping the store all together and getting pantry items delivered from online or requesting a shopper. I could see from the open cabinet that it was time to make another order.
â³Well, I see you all are home. I hope you didnât ruin your appetites for dinner.â
Martin looked at me. âHave you heard?â
I peered at Drake, who came in behind me. Heâd been upset, close to the point of tears. His eyes were still sorrowful and red like his world had come crashing down.
Though I was fairly certain I knew what the twins knew, I asked. âHear what?â
Martin held up his phone so I could see Autumnâs bruised face. âWasnât she at Nathanâs house the other night? Why did he leave to go with her?â
I started to open my mouth, but then realized I hadnât told my boys anything. They had no idea why Nathan left. Since they hadnât asked, I figured theyâd forgotten about it.
Mark was the quiet twin. He and Drake were both sensitive boys and took things to heart. Not afraid to be blunt, Mark asked. âDid Nathan do this?â
â³What? Of course not. Why would you think that?â
Mark shrugged casually, but his face was stony. âBecause everyone could see how upset he was to see her. She used to be his fiancée until she dropped him.â
â³Has Nathan ever given you any reason to think he was violent?â
The boys all looked at each other. Martin spoke up, âNo, but sometimes you can get mad about stuff and reach out in anger.â
Drake cleared his throat. âI did that. Thatâs how I got suspended.â My youngest son had been bullied for some time at his old school, and even though he reached out to the adults around him, no one stepped in.
I pulled out a chair from the kitchen table and sat down. My body felt tired. âI saw that video. Candace showed it to me. You all know Autumn didnât say who touched her. If anything, she seemed to be implicating her husband who has filed divorce.â
Martin leaned over and looked at me. âYeah, I agree with that. But it doesnât explain why she went to Nathanâs house. Mom, you and Nathan are together now.â
Drake piped up. âYes, youâre getting married. She canât just show up like that.â
I really wish I could tell the boys what was going on, but I knew my sons. They were too emotional right now and they all had friends they talked too. Nathan and Drex ultimately wanted to protect Noah so keeping his paternity issues out of the public was important.
â³Trust me. Nathan would never hurt that woman. I donât think Drex did either. There is something going on, but I canât tell you too much right now.
