Chapter Fourteen

Max

Six minutes after we’d left Sam’s garage, we parked in the lot near Ocean Beach Pier and started unloading. I helped Sam get both boards down from the roof rack and we leaned them carefully against the side of the car. I was considering the things he’d said on our drive, mostly the part where he’d said he sucked when he first started surfing. I had been buoyed by Fletcher’s assurances that Sam could get me up on a board, and I knew Sam could surf, but I didn’t want to end up looking like an idiot in front of him. I had a feeling that wish would go unfulfilled.

Sam was digging around in a bag in the trunk of his car when his phone rang.

“Sorry, Max. Let me grab this really quick.” I nodded, and he grabbed his phone from where he’d left it on the floor of the trunk. He turned and took a few steps away, but I could still hear most of his side of the conversation.

“Hello… Hey, Dylan… No, I can’t meet you this morning… Because I’m giving a surfing lesson… It doesn’t matter… No, it’s no one you know… Fine, we’ll talk later.” As Sam spoke, he paced and ran a hand through his hair. The call didn’t appear to be one he was overly happy about.

He walked back to me and gave me a sheepish smile. “Sorry.”

“It’s no problem. Everything okay?” I was secretly dying to know who Dylan was, but I refused to ask.

“Yeah. Dylan, my, um, boyfriend, wanted to meet for breakfast,” Sam replied, not looking at me.

Boyfriend? Well, that would certainly make it easier to keep Sam in the friend zone. “If I’m keeping you from something, we can totally reschedule.” I didn’t want him to take the out, but I felt compelled to offer it anyway.

“No, we’re already here, and the surf looks good. We’re doing this!”

“Okay. What do we have to do now?” I asked.

“Well, I always put my sunscreen on up here. Keeps it from getting too sandy down on the beach. I know we have the rash guards, but I don’t always like to keep it on when I’m out of the water, so I’d rather be ready,” Sam said, pulling a brown-and-yellow bottle out of the bag he’d been rummaging through. I nodded and went to the back seat to grab my bag and my own sunscreen and returned in time to see Sam slipping his rash guard off over his head.

He was gorgeous. The muscles in his chest and abs were well defined and had clearly been honed over years on the water rather than hours at the gym. A light dusting of hair trailed from his belly button and disappeared under his waistband. I was openly staring, but I couldn’t stop. We’d been to the beach together in Chicago a few times with friends, and sure, I’d ogled Sam’s body then, but this was definitely different. He was different. And I really needed to cut it out now that I knew he was attached.
