It was no surprise that when they got to the liquor store there was no sign of Simon anywhere. Mark browsed the aisles for a while, then checked his watch. “They should be here already.”

“Didn’t you say they met in the basement?” Cody asked. “Maybe we should go down there already. They could be waiting for us.”

Mark very much doubted that, but he decided it couldn’t hurt—as much as he hated sitting down in that dark basement for longer than necessary.

“It’s back this way,” he said, leading Cody to the freight elevator. None of the part-time workers at the liquor store ever seemed to care that they took the back way down; whomever had set up this meeting place years ago, they paid a pretty penny for secrecy.

“This is cool,” Cody said as they descended in the elevator. He rocked back and forth on the balls of his feet, seemingly excited. “I feel like I’m in some kind of movie or something, you know? Like those doors will open and—”

The doors did open then, and the smell of death rolled out of the room. Choking on it, Mark pulled a knife out of his belt and crossed the fingers on his left hand into the symbol for fire.

“Stay back,” he told Cody, inching out of the elevator and swiveling around the room.

Though the basement wasn’t lit very well, he could see dark blood sprayed in every direction. Kelly’s body was the first he stepped over, then Simon’s grim corpse. In the corner of the room, Leanna was barely recognizable, and Drake appeared to have been cut in half. There was no sign of what did it to them.

“I think we’re the only living people in here,” Mark said, noting Cody’s pale, frightened face. “I’m going to try to find out what happened to them.”

Then the previously unoccupied corner of the room shimmered, and Mark tensed up. But it was only Hawk, pulling down the cloaking spell that had made him invisible. Mark rushed to his side, knelt down and stared at the deep wound on his neck and chest.

“We need to get you to the hospital,” he said, reaching under Hawk to try and pick him up.

“No,” the warlock protested, shaking his head. “It’s too late for me. I’m just glad I survived long enough to warn you.” He took a deep, rattling breath, reaching up to grab Mark’s shirt collar with a surprisingly strong grip. “You need to run. Now. Take anyone and anything that matters to you, and get the hell out of Portland. This thing that is coming, it’s too powerful to fight, and it’s not worth the bloodshed. So just get out… keep living.”

Fire seemed to burn in his eyes. Mark nodded, sensing he was waiting for a response. “I promise. I’ll get out of Portland.”

“Good man.” Then he breathed out, and an imperceptible shift happened. Suddenly the muscles in his body all went lax, and his eyes slowly closed. Mark knew without checking his pulse that they would never open again; Hawk was dead.
