CHAPTER 10

Luna

When I woke up, my eyes were still swollen from my self-pity party the night before, so I took a quick shower and pressed a cold, wet washcloth to my eyes. It helped reduce the swelling a bit, and after a few minutes, I felt a little more human.

I pulled on a long-sleeved green shirt that I knew Gino liked. The tight cotton accentuated my breasts and flared out over my hips, but was short enough that it didn’t hide my ass in the washed-out jeans I wore with it. I didn’t bother with shoes, just some thick socks because the house felt cold this morning.

Testing my bedroom door, I found it was unlocked. I pulled it open and glanced up and down the hall. I didn’t see anyone, but I heard voices coming from the direction of the kitchen, and the strong aroma of bacon teased my nose. My stomach rumbled loudly. Following the smell of food, I made my way to the dining room.

As I approached the doorway, I heard Gino talking to someone and hesitated. I almost turned around and went back to my room, but my growling stomach convinced me to at least peek inside.

Gino spotted me right away. “Luna. Come get some breakfast.”

He waved me in, and I headed to the breakfast buffet set up along the sidewall as Gino’s attention returned to the man sitting with him. I quickly glanced at the back of his head, but I didn’t recognize him. However, that didn’t mean much. Gino was always talking to people. I honestly didn’t pay much attention to what he was doing or with who unless it directly affected me. Otherwise, it was none of my business.

I made myself a plate, planning to take it back to my room so I didn’t interrupt them, when he surprised me by saying, “Luna, why don’t you bring over the pot of coffee with you.”

Recognizing a demand when I heard one, I grabbed the coffeepot, balancing my orange juice in the crook of my arm as I took it, my plate, and the coffee to the table. I set it down in front of him with a small smile, then stood awkwardly with my plate while he refilled his cup.

“Join us,” he told me. “Luna, this is Milo. Milo, this is my…companion, Luna.”

The man sitting with Gino was younger than I’d expected, with bright, mossy green eyes that were startling in their intensity. A mustache covered his upper lip, attached to a short beard that was little more than a five o’clock shadow, and did nothing to hide his angular jaw. His shaggy, blond hair reminded me of a surfer, and the defined muscles of his shoulders and arms were noticeable even underneath his long-sleeved, navy blue shirt. A black hoop earring adorned his left ear. His shy smile and boy next door looks didn’t fool me, though. Anyone associated with Gino was dangerous in one way or another. “Nice to meet you,” I told him with a small smile as I sat down with my plate.
