Chapter Fourteen

Matt Gingerich and Sol Nelson seemed sufficiently impressed as they gazed around Austin’s store. “It looks like that floor took some time,” Matt said. “Hannah tells me she did a lot of scraping.”

Sol fingered the hats on the shelf against the wall. “It smells new. Like pine and varnish.” He turned and set a plastic garbage bag on the counter. “Here’s the quilt from my mamm. She’s says to tell you she’s got two more almost ready.”

Austin pulled open the edges of the bag. A stunning combination of orange and red fabrics met his eye. Erna Nelson made exquisite quilts. One had sold at auction last year for eight hundred dollars. “And she’s okay to work on consignment?”

“Jah. Pay her when you sell the quilt. She’s froh to have a place to sell them besides at auction. They sell for more money in a store.”

Austin nodded. “Denki. I hope we sell every quilt she wants to make.”

Matt Gingerich showed Austin his box. “It wonders me if you would want to sell these ornaments. The Englischers love a souvenir for their Christmas trees.”

Austin reached into the box and pulled out a little black buggy molded from clay, complete with Amish people looking out the window. “I like this,” he said. Another clay ornament was an Amish girl holding a basket of apples. “These will be wunderbarr for the Christmas season.”

Matt burst into a smile. “I mold them, and my schwester Mandy paints them.”

“It wonders me if you will let me take them on consignment.” Austin didn’t have enough money to buy the Amish handicrafts outright. He barely had enough to stock regular grocery items. Even with the relatively short list of things the Glicks didn’t sell, it had taken a great deal of money to put goods on the shelves.

“For sure and certain,” Matt said. “I made two copies of my list. You pay me for what you sell, and I’ll come get the rest after Christmas.”

“And you’ll be sure to bring more if I sell out?”

“Jah,” Matt said, grinning at the thought of selling out.

Sol did a quick look about the store. All the shelves were up and most of the merchandise was on the shelves. Hannah and James had draped pine boughs with red ribbon over the windows and doors and up the stairs. It looked and smelled like Christmastime. “On opening day, Hannah and Mary Yutzy are baking gingerbread cookies free for every customer.” Then the store would really smell like Christmas. Austin’s heart thumped inside his chest. They opened in five days.

Sol’s eyebrows bobbed up and down. “I hear Priscilla Lambright is very interested in your store.”

Warmth traveled up Austin’s neck. “She’s helping me with my organic section.”

Sol grinned. “You’re working on more than the organic section together. They say she likes you.”

Matt Gingerich set his box on the counter and eyed Austin curiously. “Ach. I wish she liked me. She’s wonderful pretty.”

Sol smoothed his hand along the counter. “Do you know how many boys envy you?”

“Covetousness is a sin,” Matt said, “but I’m jealous.
