By the time I get home, Mary's already gone off to do her regular shift over to the hospital. The note I left her the day before is still laying on the kitchen table. I don't know if she's read it.
I make myself some supper and sit down by myself to eat it. It's when Mary's working four to twelve that it would be nice if my old man came over to have a meal and chew the fat with me.
But he hates my cooking and he very rarely comes over when Mary ain't here.
I think he's got a thing for Mary. Nothing wrong, nothing crazy, just the way a man will love the young woman he wants for his only son. Also she reminds him of my motherâGod keep herâwhen she was alive and the house was filled with her singing and humming the way she did, and the way Mary does.
All this loneliness is making me very blue, and I ain't got in the habit of letting television substitute for people.
So, I sit down and read this book I took a minute to pick up from the public library, which is all about crocodilians.
I learn, among other things I probably ain't going to use if I live to be a hundred, that it's very tough being a baby crocodile.
Grownup crocs eat them after they hatch. Even their own mothers will do this, after she's spent weeks guarding the nest, so it's very hard to understand nature, sometimes.
I also learn those ferocious teeth they got ain't even used for tearing and chewing. Those teeth is just to hold their prey long enough to kill it, and then they swallow it whole unless it's so big they got to bite it into pieces.
After a while I go take a shower and get into bed to read some more. But I don't read much.
