The next morning, Violet was surprised to find that she and Ewan were alone in the breakfast room. She sat down opposite him and wished him good morning, then dropped her gaze to her plate and began to eat her eggs.

“Violet,” Ewan said quietly, reaching for her hand across the table, “look at me.”

She looked up into his pale eyes, and he sighed. “I have been so unkind to you, and I am sorry. I was embarrassed after our wedding night and I was too cowardly to face you. Please forgive me.”

He looked so contrite that Violet had no hesitation. “I forgive you, Ewan, and thank you.”

“Thank you too, Violet. My mother suggested that we should go on a picnic today,” he informed her. “Would you like to?”

She clapped her hands. “Indeed, I would!” she answered joyfully.

Ewan laughed. “She thought you might say that, so she had the kitchen staff make up a basket. We can take a walk to Loch Allen if you like.”

Violet’s eyes widened with surprise and delight. “That sounds lovely!” she exclaimed. She gave Ewan a wide smile.

“Go and get ready,” he said, laughing at her almost childlike enthusiasm.

Violet needed no second bidding.
