Just who is Sebastian MacTavish? What’s he hidin’?

That was the question spinning through Leon’s mind as he’d spent the last week feverishly researching, with no results. How was it possible that a man – a Laird’s son, no less! – could hide his whole identity?

Looking up the records had shown the man that Sebastian’s surname was different from his father’s, but that was not terribly suspicious in and of itself. The Laird of Fletcher was not currently married – it was well known that his son was a bastard – so it seemed likely the boy was using his mother’s name.

Sentimental tripe.

There were no official records of the lad’s birth. However, his existence was ordinary enough knowledge, which loaned credence to the bastard theory. But if he had no true-born brothers, uncles, cousins, or even sisters, then Sebastian’s state of legality mattered not. If his father had acknowledged him openly, then the man would not be able to use it against him.

But there must be somethin’. Everybody had somethin’.

Leon knew how to gather and use information. It was how he’d gotten to the position he was in now – and how he’d retained it. Several Lairds and other nobles were under his thumb, as were most of the businessmen in this Clan and the next. So how was it that Sebastian MacTavish was so elusive?

Worse, why was he so familiar? Something about his coloring and the way his name rang in Leon’s ears nagged at him, something from far away and long ago. Even if he didn’t seek to gain more material for potential future bargains and threats, this feeling would be more than enough to spur him on.

But how to get to the lad? All information that may exist about him was no doubt in the North, cut off by the snow just as Laird Fletcher himself was. And indeed, Sebastian was far from talkative.

I’ll need to approach this from a different corner. What do I ken?

There was Aurora, though Leon seriously doubted that the silly girl knew any more than he did about the mysterious fellow. That left the two other figures that somehow fit into the conundrum of Sebastian’s secret.

The man-at-arms, and Aurora’s maid. Both of them are involved, somehow. I just didnae ken how.

He already knew everything there was to know about the servant girl, of course. He made a habit of paying attention to anyone who might be close to the Laird and the Laird’s family, and that included the Castle staff. But the man-at-arms…

Theodore MacNevin, he calls himself. Let’s see what we can find.

There was always a way to secrets, no matter how circuitous the route. Leon simply had to show patience, and soon all of the knowledge would be his.

Watch out, Sebastian MacTavish. I’m comin’ for ye.
