Just after Grace left, the men who had been shouting came swaggering along to Eleanor’s cell. They were led by a tall, broad, sandy-haired man who looked as if he belonged to the Norse race. He was more than half-drunk, and the others who were with him were equally so.
They came in and looked through the bars on the cell door, leering at her.
“Well, milady,” the Norseman boomed in a voice that was almost as deep as Ranald’s, “it seems that we are the lucky yins who are lookin’ after ye for awhile.” He leered at her. “An’ I must say it will be a very pleasant task, milady, for ye are the prettiest bit o’ fluff I have seen for a long time.”
“I am not,” Eleanor ground out, “a bit of fluff. I am a woman, and I deserve respect!”
“Pardon me, M’ladyship!” the man said mockingly. “I didnae mean tae offend ye. The earl has gied very strict orders that ye are tae be looked after, so ye will come tae nae harm fae us. Tell me milady, are ye a...y’knaw?”

“Well, YOU certainly will not!” Eleanor replied, her cheeks red with rage. “And neither will any of the rest of you! You are filthy, uncouth, and disgusting. Get out of my sight.” She strutted away to the window at the back of the cell and was followed by whistles and catcalls which she tried to ignore. She could have shouted back, but she would not bring herself down to their level. She turned her back on them while they continued to pelt her with insults and obscenities. If only Ranald was here, she thought. He would keep me safe.
She wanted to throw herself on the bed and weep, but she would not allow them to see that they were hurting her.
Presently, to her great relief, the guards were called away to eat, and that was when they discovered that one of their numbers was missing, but rather than go and get him, they decided to dine first.
Eleanor’s dinner was served by an extremely thin old woman with frizzy gray hair. They said nothing to each other, but Eleanor thought she had an air of sympathy about her. The woman carried keys in her pocket, and for a moment she thought of trying to pull them from her, but she was a strong young lady whereas
