Jonathan felt a wet tongue licking his face. Groggily, he pushed Doiche away and groaned into the square of sunlight that was happily casting its heat and brightness onto his pillow.

“Bloody daylight, why must ye come so early?”

Rubbing his face, he sat up and stared out of the window. It was a beautiful day, but he had not slept very well, and so its dawning was not quite welcome. As he looked down at the empty place next to him on the bed, he remembered last evening when Amanda didn’t come. She hadn’t come. The words kept repeating themselves in Jonathan’s mind; he rubbed a hand through his hair.

“Why did she nae come?” he asked a panting Doiche, who was eagerly ready to take on the day when Jonathan felt like slinking back underneath the covers. He felt a cold wariness, and he hoped that her reasoning had nothing to do with Romain.

“Was she afraid, or perhaps she did nae receive the note?”

Multitudes of possibilities filled his mind, and he tried to consider each one but then got tired of it and laid back on the pillow. Without beautiful memories from a whole night spent in the comforting company of Amanda Roberts, he had only the discussion with Finn to remind him of all of his ever-present problems.

He wanted to close his eyes to the world and forget everything, but Doiche was not going to let him. She nudged under his arm and began licking his face again, so much so that he had to stand up.

“Doiche, I daenae ken of any other Laird who lets their dog sleep with them in the bed like a fool. Ye get special treatment,” he pointed to her. “And now I am talkin’ to a dog in the first thing in the morning.”

Grumbling to himself, he dressed and wandered down to his study, considering whether or not he could do a bit of hunting that day. It was one of the only ways he could relax. Well, that and other things. Things he was very much interested in doing with Amanda if she had only come last night. They could have finished whatever they’d started.

In the study, he scribbled a few things down, trying to think about what sort of preparations needed to be made to defend the castle, but most of the time found himself staring out of the window instead of focusing on the matters at hand. Someone knocked at the door, and Mrs. MacTavish entered.

“Laird, breakfast is ready in the Hall. Everyone is there, but they wait for ye. Will ye join them, or shall I bring the food to ye here?”

“Nay,” he shook his head. “I will join the others.” He stood up, ready to leave but then had an idea. “Tell them I will be there in a moment, Mrs. MacTavish.”

She curtsied and left the room while Jonathan considered it a wicked idea to punish Amanda for not coming. He would write another note and slip it into her hand at breakfast.
