Chapter 19
James stood in the inner bailey, watching Catrìonaâs thin figure in her baggy brown dress as she walked to the main keep to check on Laomann and Tadhg.
The last three days spent with her had been the biggest adventure of his life. Exciting. Unforgettable. Somehow, he knew heâd never be the same.
The kiss⦠He still didnât know what had possessed him to break all chains of caution and let her kiss him.
Other than that heâd wanted toâso much he didnât think there could be a power strong enough to keep him from her.
But the trip back had been quiet at first. Then, in their usual manner, theyâd started chatting. Conversation had flowed easily. Heâd asked her about her life, about Rogene and David and what had happened since May. About Euphemia of Ross, too, and the events that had led to Euphemia pretty much declaring a war on clan Mackenzie.
And she told him about the herb that the abbess had told her aboutâmandrake. That it was usually given as a painkiller, not to poison people. That it was a rare herb, very hard to find, which was why Catrìona had never used it and had never even known it could kill when used in large amounts.
The most obvious suspect was Finn.
And to confirm that, James would have to search through Finnâs things and have Catrìona verify if he had mandrake among his herbs
He saw the doubt in Catrìonaâs eyes, and when heâd asked her about it, sheâd said she still believed him innocent. But she was lying. He heard that in her cracked voice, saw it in the frown as she vigorously shook her head.
When Catrìona reached the entrance to the main keep, she turned to him and their eyes met. Standing there, ten feet away from her, he felt his heart skip a beat. She was sweet and almost eerie in the twilight of the late eveningânot an angel anymore, but a vision from another world. So distant and so beautiful, she didnât seem real. Sìneagâs words came to him againâCatrìona, a sweet lass, and the love of yer life.
The bloody love of his lifeâ¦
With a dull ache in his chest, he turned away from her. He didnât want to. He wanted to cross the distance between them, kiss her, bury his face in her hair and inhale the scent of clean linen, grass, and wildflowers. Wanted to take her into his arms and carry her away from here to somewhere where they could be aloneâand happy.
But he didnât. What good would that do? She wanted to be a nun. He had to go back to the twenty-first century. Emily and her baby had been on his mind every day, but less and less so the more time he spent here. The thought stabbed him in the gut. What was wrong with him that heâd forget his only family, when heâd promised Em to help her and be there for her?
He should run into the dungeon right now, slam his palm into the rock, and go back.
