Mt. Olympus, Greece.
The Heavens.
"Must you always act as though you don't care? Does it please you more to do so?"
Zeus frowned at Mnemosyne. He wasn't entirely pleased with her at the moment. That he respected where her loyalties lay was without question. She was a mother. This was her daughter. He leaned over, peered down through the clouds, moisture, sunrays and atmosphere and focused on his mischievous, rebellious, foolhardy daughter. Prone to tragedy, that's what he'd always said about Melpomene. It's what he'd designated her to dwell within, to help others cope with and work through.
He sighed and looked back at the goddess who pled a mother's plea. Have mercy, she's our daughter, your daughter. Do right by her.
She'd betrayed him. Her homeland, kingdom, birthplace⦠him! Have mercy? He'd already shown enough mercy.
He leaned forward and gave the full force of his nature to the muse's mother. "Tell me, woman, what will the world do without her? Where were her loyalties when she forfeited all for one puny mortal?" His temper was rising; the white clouds behind him developed black bellies. "She is my daughter, a high honor, a right, and she throws it aside for not only one outside of her supreme nationality but one who doesn't want her!"
Mnemosyne was not the mother of nine fine daughters for naught. She stood tall and spoke her mind. "She made a decision. The world will carry on just fine without her. I'm sure you'll see to that. For the most part, she helped people through tragic events in their life, assisted through such pain and hurt. Do you think she does not feel and remember every inkling of it? That it is not a weight she carries on her shoulders?"
She narrowed her eyes, thrust her chin forward and met his divine regard. "Of all things, tragedy! Yes, I realize you're the god of all beings and know such pain but she's not of your caliber and has carried such and only such her whole existence. That, in my opinion, is a great burden, one without much joy, love and tenderness. You may want to consider that before you eternally doom her for incompetence, for letting you down."
He stroked his beard and tempered the fury yet unleashed, understood that Mnemosyne's words were spoken from the heart and held some level of credence, albeit small. For gods and goddesses were created not only for divinity but to serve. To skirt alongside the parallel plane between mortals and immortals. But always they had strength and to lose strength, to turn away from their calling was an all-consuming act that doomed them to Hades' clutch, beyond Zeus' reach.
If he was so inclined to let the situation go beyond his reach, which he was.
Apparently, Mnemosyne was finished and chose to let her words ferment as she bowed and backed away. A cloudbank took her from his vision. Did she realize what she asked of him? That which he wouldn't do, couldn't do?
Melpomene was his daughter; she served a purpose as did all of his children.
