Ewen was doing his best to treat Bonnie as tenderly as she deserved. Though she was making that a challenge when she was touching him the way she was, straddling his lap now, and testing his restraint to the max.

After hearing a little about her selfish ex, he wanted this to be good for her. He knew he was probably the rebound guy in this scenario, but he couldn’t ask for more than that. To do so would put their working relationship in jeopardy and he was coming to rely on Bonnie more and more. Tonight had proved that. He’d opened up to her more about his family than he ever had with anyone else, but that was also why this couldn’t be any more than sex. Relationships never worked out for him and he wasn’t ready to lose Bonnie when he’d just found her.

His father’s letter had knocked him for six. He’d never expected an apology, especially posthumously. It was bittersweet to receive one when it was too late to do anything about it. They’d wasted so much time and thrown away a relationship. Giving up on one another too easily, at a time when they’d probably needed each other more than ever. With his father’s health in decline, and Ewen’s relationship with Victoria on the critical list too, they could have leaned on each other.

Now there was no going back. He didn’t want to make the same mistake again with someone he cared about. Yes, despite years of telling himself otherwise, he’d still loved his parents. Since they’d seemed happier without him in their lives, it had been easier to convince himself he didn’t need them. It was only now his father had confessed it was fear that had kept him from reaching out that Ewen could admit the same. Except he also hadn’t wanted to face the same rejection, which had bordered on hatred, that he’d received at the time of Ruari’s death. So he’d stayed away, and now it was too late to repair the damage.

It was a bitter pill to swallow. And a reminder not to waste time. He didn’t want to live with any more regrets. Tonight he wanted to be with Bonnie, to express those growing feelings he had towards her. All the self-recriminations could wait. He just wanted to feel good, and it seemed as though Bonnie was overdue some loving too. Although she was doing her best to make him forget any chivalrous behaviour, grinding against him. Teasing him until he was ready to explode.

Then she bore down on him, joining their bodies together, and Ewen knew he was lost to her. With one hand braced on his chest, the other stroking between his thighs, Bonnie had him at her mercy. It was all he could do not to flip her onto her back and thrust into her like the Neanderthal she brought out in him. But she needed this. She needed to be in control. To find out what she liked.
