Chapter 19

“What happened?” said Dev, as she gripped the sides of the laptop, the wind on her neck seeming arctic.

“His bandwidth was strong, but then it cut out. Not because we lost the signal—something interfered,” said Petra, tapping on his tablet while studying the wave configuration. “And my drones are not responding either.”

McNeal inserted herself between them, scrutinizing the laptop and tapping her finger on the flashing red triangle on the map that indicated Mitch’s former GPS coordinates. “What the hell is going on? Why is it indicating his tracking device is offline?”

Dev folded her arms, staring at the screen as if it would answer back then glancing over at Petra, whose startled expression matched her own.

“Probably a temporary glitch,” said Petra. “Just give it a minute.” He began feverishly typing on the keyboard, causing McNeal to step back.

The steely-eyed Brit turned her attention to Dev. “Any other explanations you care to share about Kearns being fucking off grid?” She clawed the latter words out in air quotes with her fingers.

Dev took a step closer, nearly stepping on the woman’s polished leather boots. “You tell me—the GPS tracker in his system was inserted by your medical staff, as I recall.”

“And could have been circumvented by someone with the right background,” she said, glancing at Petra.

Dev’s chest constricted, her fists balling. “You’re beginning to cross a line that you don’t want to venture over.”

“Question is, what geographic line is Kearns going to be crossing over soon—because it sure as hell doesn’t look like it’s going to be the Polish border.”

Petra raised one hand, snapping his fingers. “Alright, alright, he’s back online.” The lanky operator squinted at the screen as the two women and Taylor moved in around him. “Only he’s heading on a southwest route.”

McNeal shuffled closer to the laptop, thrusting her index finger at a snaky yellow line on the screen. “That’ll take him straight to Highway 81—he’s not heading back here at all.”

Petra stared at the screen again. “Now it shows he’s moving back towards the prison—wait, no, he’s heading northeast.” He shook his head. “Something’s gone wrong.”

Taylor brushed his elbow past Dev’s as he stepped back. “Ms. Leitner, unless you have some contingency plan that we are unaware of, it looks like Mr. Kearns has gone rogue.”

Dev looked at the screen again, the image of the interlaced roads becoming blurry as she thought back to Mitch’s intended route, which she had recounted in dizzying detail with him. What the hell is going on? Mitch, where are you heading?
