Sully
Fuck.
The dark gray Nissan Altima my niece had taken a snapshot of in her motherâs driveway is now parked in front of my place.
Iâd so hoped I could beat my sister home, but we didnât leave the canyon where we found Yokum until late yesterday afternoon and were forced to spend another night out in the field.
Iâm tired, hot, I reek, and I was counting on having a shower before getting sucked into family drama, but it looks like that isnât going to happen. Hope Isobel didnât give Pippa a hard time. My sister can be protective and it wouldâve been a shock to see a woman in my space, let alone a pregnant one.
The front door opens and I watch Pippa slip outside at the same time I get out of the truck. Sheâs carrying a big plastic bag as she hurries over to me.
âThey just got here ten minutes ago. So far, no bloodshed, so Iâve got it covered for now. You can grab a quick shower in Sloaneâs cabin.â
She shoves the plastic bag in my hands. It has a towel, my soap, and clean clothes. There are a million things I want to ask, but sheâs shoving me with some force in the direction of the cabin next door.
âHurry.â
I shower in record time, get dressed, and head to my place, leaving the bag with my dirty shit on the porch. Then I walk in where an icy reception awaits me.
âWere you planning to tell me at any time?â
Isobel is not happy with me. I guess it means her anger is focused on me and not Sloane, but Iâm sure itâs only a matter of time before itâs my nieceâs turn.
I close the door, keeping the air-conditioned cabin cool, and move toward Pippa, who is doing something in the kitchen.
âAs a matter of fact, I was gonna give you a heads-up before you got here, but then we got called out on a search,â I tell my sister as I walk up behind Pippa, slide a hand over her belly, and bend down to press a kiss to the side of her neck. âHey, Honey. Whatcha doing?â I look over her shoulder at the wooden board she is loading cheese and deli meats onto.
âCharcuterie board.â
Donât know what the hell that is, but it sure looks good. She tries to slap my hand when I reach over and snatch a slice of salami, stuffing it in my mouth. Only then do I turn around and look into the living room.
Sloane already has us all tuned out as she scrolls through something on her phone, Isobelâs mouth is hanging open, and the tall guy from the picture standing behind her is wearing a grin. Itâs him I head for first.
âYou must be Steve.â
He shakes the hand I offer. A nice firm shake, nothing challenging, but strong and steady. I like him already.
âAnd you are Sullivan.â
âItâs Sully,â my niece mumbles from her perch on the couch, without as much as looking up.
