Efforts So Far

Trepidation dragged Matt into the kitchen. His idea to help shelter and protect Kate would not go over well, but he didn’t see any other way, short of her being with him all the time. Joined at the hip right now wouldn’t work. He needed to be unfettered. The thought of bodyguards popped into his mind, but in a passing way.

Matt decided if Kate were dead set against his preferred choice, he would investigate and see what personal security solution he could come up with. It wasn’t the money for the bodyguards, which he imagined would be pricey; it was the loss of privacy. He didn’t want anyone given easy access to his and Kate’s life.

Kate, standing over the oven making Matt his favorite breakfast of fried eggs, bacon, home-fries, and rye toast, felt a tear move down the side of her cheek as Matt walked up and kissed her on the back of her neck.

She rubbed the back of her free hand against the cheek not wanting Matt to see her tears. Her body tingled, as it always did, with Matt’s gentle touch of the lips.

“Shower feel good?”

“Yes, it did, thanks. Hopefully, I can catch a second wind now.”

Matt headed over to the patio door and looked out.

“Glad to see the rain has subsided. Looks like it’s going to be a nice day. I hope winter doesn’t hit too early. There’s a lot I want to get done around the house before it gets too wet and cold.”

Kate didn’t reply. She knew Matt wasn’t looking for a response. She turned the burners off on the stove, then grabbed a plate out of the cupboard. The rye bread popped out of the toaster. Grabbing it first, she buttered it, stacking the rigid bread on the plate. Dishing out a healthy portion of potatoes, she slapped a couple of strips of bacon on the plate before lifting the egg skillet and sliding three organic eggs, with their deep orange yolks, onto the plate.

Matt insisted on organic eggs. Kate always laughed at him because it had nothing to do with the chickens per se, but the fact the eggs tasted better. She would rib Matt about being a taste bud environmentalist.

“Here you go, babe. Coffee and juice this morning?”

Matt turned from the patio door and the disturbing view of police equipment in the backyard.

“Looks like Koda is having fun out there. You did a good job selecting him, Kate. I’m glad you brought him home.”

“Me too, Matt. Coffee and juice?”

“I’m sorry Kate. Coffee is fine. I don’t want the sugar from the juice this morning. I want to avoid any carb crash. I need to be on my toes. So much is happening.”

Matt sat, took a healthy bite out of a piece of rye, and then reached for the salt and pepper. Once more, he contemplated telling Kate about the email, but his gut told him it would be a mistake. How much did she need to know? It wasn’t like he was being dishonest with her.
