Chapter Eleven

ROBERT TANGO

I’ve pulled up my pants and zipped up, and Carter has cleaned herself too. We’re getting ready to walk out of the bathroom.

She puts her hand on the knob and then quickly turns to me. “You swear you have AMLP?”

I kiss the side of her face. “Jack Lord and I are partnering for East Coast projects. Before AMLP went to Tom Roth, they begged Lord Construction and Development to take it.”

“And he’s taking it now?”

“Yes, and I’m his architectural partner.”

“Does Tom know this?”

“He will tomorrow.”

Finally, she chuckles. “And we just fucked in his bathroom.”

“He fucking deserves it. He’s a tool.”

“You mean the tool box.”

We laugh, and I get to taste her mouth one more time before she opens the door and strolls into the dining room with the confidence I want her to have. However, I see that Hannah’s gone.

Grace is shaking her head. “Classy, Carter.”

“Being that you’re the queen of the classless, I won’t take that as a compliment.” Carter snatches her purse off the back of her chair.

“And, um, since you’ve got the contract with Tom over there all sewn up, I’ll just leave as well,” I say.

“Tell your girlfriend that she might as well fly back to San Francisco and fuck you some more. She’s fired,” Grace says.

Carter’s already out of the dining room. I stop just before I make it out and turn around.

“You’re doing the hiring and firing for Beatty now?”

Grace crosses her arms and smirks. “I’m running the San Francisco office of Metropolis, and my dad is chief architect.”

“Then that means you quit.”

She winks. “You made it possible.”

Grace is referring to the clause that lets her quit if she wants. I figure it’s best for her to move fast on dissolving the contract before she finds out she’s just bought a lot of swampland.

“Well, you better move fast, daddy’s girl, because tonight, I’ll be talking to my lawyers, and I will make it impossible for you to work for me and him at the same time.”

Grace narrows her eyes.

Tom wiggles his fingers at me. “Bye now,” he says dismissively.

I could punch him in the throat, but it’s too late—I’ve already delivered a blow. I stroll out of the dining room like the lion he wishes he could be.
