Twenty-Two

So at this time I had to ask myself, huh? Why would Heavy Metal Ninja be here with the violence? Wasn’t he working for the Confessor? Were these aggressive contract negotiations?

Another suit, weapon drawn and one hand on Sofia, kept his body in between her and HMN as he pushed her toward the door.

At this point I also noticed the Ninja-sized hole in the glass door to the balcony. Even though they knew him, he’d used his powers to get in.

The Ninja noticed Sofia and her guard. He lost interest in his dance partners, flipped over a couch, and landed a punch right into the guard’s neck. It was so hard the man dropped.

Sofia yelled and stepped back.

Giving the first three some room. They drew their pistols and got a bead on the Ninja.

Sofia was totally in their backfield, and they were beyond caring at this point.

It was possible the Ninja might be hurt by bullets. But Sofia would certainly be hurt by bullets.

I moved. As fast as I could, I jumped out of the closet, vaulted over the kitchen counter, and tackled Sofia out of the way.

Guns started going off.

The Ninja just stood there and took it. Bullets bounded off his back.

Cracks spiderwebbed from the Ninja’s feet in the fake wood tile and bullets ricocheted off him. He didn’t bleed. His clothes ripped apart from the bullets, but he didn’t bleed.

“Go, go, go!” I forced Sofia up and into the room she’d come out of.

“Who are you?” She pushed me away. “Who is that guy?”

“I’m Raven. I’m with the Guard. I’m here to help you. We’ve got to get out of this building.”

“Like hell! I’m not going anywhere with you.”

One of her bodyguards screamed and then stopped screaming.

She reconsidered. “How can we get out of here?”

I tipped the mattress over the door. “Get onto the balcony.”

“Can you fly?” She was not really buying that I was with the Guard, but she was willing to entertain the idea. Desperation is a powerful thing.

“Something like that.” I beat her over to the door and assisted her getting to the balcony.

I really could use some back up here.

The door to her unit splintered. The bed bought us another heart beat.

“Hold on tight,” I told her.

She looked at me, over the edge, at the door, then back at me. “What?”

A bodyguard bought us a second, but he was dealt with quickly and finally.

She threw her arms around my neck and wrapped her legs around me in a figure four.

“That tight,” I pointed out. She didn’t loosen her grip.

“Here we go!” I rolled over the railing, rotated in the air and caught the balcony railing below.

She screamed.

Hold on, hold on. I didn’t have an extra hand if she let go.

I swung out over the seventeen-story drop, kicked my legs, and flew back into the patio on floor sixteen.

I landed back first, trying to shield her from the impact.

“Oh, God. Oh, God.” She had not lost any of her grip.

But now I needed to get up.
