Chapter 11

Zoey could barely hide her excitement as they walked up to the summit. This was higher than she’d been in the mountains before. She’d gone up a little way to check out the view just to orient herself, but this was different. This time, she was heading for the clouds for the sheer fun of it.

“You’re about to get a look at my favorite place in the Rocky Mountains,” said Wilder. “Are you ready for this?”

“I’m ready, Daddy!” Zoey replied giddily. As they crested the summit, the view that spread out before her took her breath away. Blue sky, imposing rocks, gnarled pines, bright wildflowers, and the most stunning lake Zoey had ever seen.

“It’s called Dream Lake,” said Wilder. “I’m not sure how it got its name, but it’s definitely kinda magical.”

“It is,” Zoey agreed. “It’s perfect.” The water in the lake looked so blue, so inviting. And the reflection of the trees and mountains in the surface was out-of-this-world.

“A view like that makes you stop and think, huh?” said Wilder.

“It sure does.”

“Like having the world at your feet.”

They began to walk down the craggy stone steps in the side of the mountain as they approached the lake.

“You know,” said Wilder, “part of the reason that I think this place is perfectly named is that I always think about what I want from life when I come here. The peace, the beauty. It reminds you of the things that are important to you.”

“I think I know what you mean,” Zoey said softly.

Wilder paused. “Whatever it is you want to do, sweetheart, you go do it. You’re young, you’re smart as heck. You deserve whatever it is you’re looking for.”

Zoey sighed. She still hadn’t told Wilder everything about her past. Exactly why she had run away. Why she could never have everything she dreamed of. She would tell him everything, and she would do it soon.

“Wilder,” she said, slipping her hand into his as they approached the water. “All I know is that right now, I want this.”

Wilder squeezed her hand. “Me too.”

They slipped into a happy silence with one another as they walked to the edge of the lake. They had an understanding now. There was nothing else to say at this moment.

“Look at that,” said Wilder, and peered down into the blue. “Looks like my dream came true.”

Zoey peered down into the water and saw what Wilder was talking about. Reflected perfectly in the water’s surface she saw a young woman, her expression free from worry, and an older, kind-faced man, holding hands with her as their hearts beat in unison.

“It’s us,” she marveled.

Wilder tugged on Zoey’s hand, pulling her closer to him, then turning her around so that she was facing him. She threw down her crutch and surrendered to his strength, letting herself fall against his chest as he held her. Then, she felt his fingers nudging her chin, tilting it up toward his own.

Her tummy backflipped as she realized what was happening: a kiss! All the things they’d done together so far, and still he had yet to kiss her.
