“MELODY!” JENSEN LUNGED forward, wrapping his arms around her torso as she swayed on her feet.

“I’m all right,” she whispered, her eyes squeezed shut as if in pain.

“Just breathe, sweetheart. That’s it...in and out.” His eyes darted all over her. The goosebumps on her skin let him know she was cold, which was to be expected, but otherwise, he couldn't figure out what was wrong. Mitchell had made some horrible comments, but he hadn’t actually touched Melody, so what was causing her to grow faint?

“Sorry,” Melody said, her voice a little stronger. She straightened her body, but he kept his hands around her waist, nervous that she would fall over if he let go completely. “I think I just got overwhelmed once we got out of there.”

Jensen pulled her into his chest, tucking her head under his chin. “You were so brave back there.”

Melody laughed, the sound a little wild. “I wasn’t brave at all. I was shaking in my boots.” She leaned back to look at him. Her nose and eyes were red and Jensen couldn’t stop himself from wiping away her tears. “It breaks my heart to think of leaving Micah there,” she whispered, her eyes darting back and forth between his.

Jensen sighed and rested his forehead against hers. “I know. But it wasn’t safe for you to be there any longer.” Just the thought of what Mitchell had said to her had Jensen’s blood boiling. The man was revolting. They definitely needed to get Micah out of the house, but Jensen wouldn’t have been able to stay calm if anything had happened to Melody.

“Don’t.”

He looked down, his eyes wide. “What?”

“Don’t even think about it,” she declared, her hands fisting his shirt. “Mitchell isn’t going to touch me. He was just saying those things to rile you up.” She snorted. “He probably was hoping you’d throw a punch so he could call the police.”

Jensen smirked. “Ken would have been on my side.”

Melody wasn’t amused. “I’m a big girl, Jensen. I’ll be fine. It’s Micah we need to worry about.”

“And I will worry about him,” Jensen agreed. “As long as you stay out of the equation.” He stepped back, took her hand and began leading her back through town. Despite the fact that their footsteps were hurried, Jensen found himself shivering by the time they got back to the school. Pulling his keys from his pocket, he opened the car door. “Get in.”

“I need to get my own car,” Melody protested, but Jensen shook his head.

“I’m not letting you out of my sight for the next while, so hop in.”

Melody put her hands on her hips, and it was easy to see her protest on her lips, but Jensen stepped forward and kissed her before she could speak.

“I know you’re amazing,” he whispered against her mouth. “But the way Mitchell looked at you has me ready to kill someone. So think of this as a favor for myself. I need to be with you for the next while, to make sure you’re safe.
