Chapter 29

DETECTIVE DWAYNE DIGBY

Detective Dwayne Digby didn’t know that when Evie Laurent had spotted him in the apartment building lobby six weeks earlier, she’d assumed his muscles had been built up over time in order to protect himself and intimidate others. She had actually been correct in that assumption. Digby worked very hard to be strong, lifting heavy weights at the gym three times a week. When he saw himself in the mirror, he didn’t see a thug, or a cop, or anything but himself. If he noticed anything, it was only spots that needed improvement. For example, his calves could be bigger.

When it came to Evie’s first impressions, Digby also didn’t know that the petite girl with the big brown eyes had mentally classified him as a thug, a criminal. She couldn’t have been more wrong. The exact opposite was true.

Digby spent his workdays and work nights chasing down and incarcerating criminals. He was a detective on the city’s police force, and had been for years.

That Sunday afternoon, while Evie had been at the Greenwood house, arguing with her mother and then bonding with the older woman’s former lover, Detective Digby had been having much less fun.

He’d been chasing down leads on a sex offender who’d skipped parole. The leads were the kind of no-brainer leads no detective wanted: two more offenses committed in a twelve-hour spree.

Now it was late. Digby had missed dinner, but now he could eat it knowing that the dirtbag was back in custody. The detective had succeeded at doing his job, though it was the kind of outcome that didn’t feel very satisfying. The offender was back behind bars, but nobody could wind back the clock and undo the damage of his spree. The victims would have to make do with counselling, unless one of them decided to take matters of justice into her own hands.

Officially, Digby didn’t condone vigilante retribution.

Unofficially, he was warming up to the concept. When he found himself getting too warm on the idea, he knew it was time for a break.

As he left the station with dark fantasies of torture in his head, he realized he really was due for a vacation. Overdue, even.

Digby steered his vehicle toward home, and tried to relax his shoulders. He tried to reassure himself. Everything would be okay. Everything was how it should be. There were evil forces in the world, and there were other forces that kept the balance. Life didn’t exist in perfection, because that wouldn’t be life.

Despite this logical self-talk, he couldn’t help recalling the petite young woman whose tears were still on his shoulder. She was the mother of a child who’d been attacked, and she’d been the reason Digby had stayed past the end of his shift instead of passing the torch to the other detectives. He’d kept working because he was such a sucker for a cute face. The young mother had been almost as cute as his new neighbor, Evie. If anything ever happened to Evie, he’d.
