Chapter Eight

“Aleksander, a word,” Viktor said after dismissing everyone.

Katya gathered her notes, debating whether she should stick around or wait for Aleks outside. She had no intention of walking away from him and making him stew and figure out what he did wrong. While it was tempting, Katya had a kid to think about. Then there was the Family business to think about.

Her job as Viktor’s secretary kept her constantly on her feet. When their men or their wives, girlfriends, or other family members couldn’t approach Viktor or Pavel, they turned to her for help. Viktor shot her a look. She sighed and left the two men alone.

“Marina and I are throwing a barbecue next week,” Pavel told her conversationally on their way out. “You should invite Aleksander.”

She raised an eyebrow, too surprised for words.

“Viktor and Ava are in charge of appetizers. You can bring whatever you want,” Pavel said.

“I can bring Aleks?” she asked carefully. Katya let out a laugh. “I’m not even sure if we’re still on the same page.”

Katya still couldn’t believe Aleks outright told Pavel he intended to make her his wife. Did Aleks even think to ask her opinion? Were they even considered an item? They had one date and had sex twice. That didn’t equate to a relationship. Actually, wait. Aleks invited himself over for dinner without telling her firsthand. That wasn’t even a proper date.

That didn’t mean she wanted him gone. She only wished he’d talk to her more.

“I might not like him, even though I can’t deny he’s invaluable to the organization,” Pavel said. “But I can tell he’s crazy about you.”

“And you know that how?”

Pavel laughed. “Only a blind man wouldn’t notice how he’s only been looking at you over the past years.”

“What did you and Aleks talk about earlier?” she finally asked him.

“I told him to consider giving his task to someone else, but it looks like Viktor isn’t about to give him a choice.” Pavel expelled a sigh, then took out a packet of cigarettes from his jacket pocket.

She narrowed her eyes. “Marina told me you’re trying to quit smoking.”

“She did, didn’t she? But I smoke when I’m stressed out,” Pavel said, as if that excused him. He pulled out a cigarette stick. She snatched his lighter. He glared at her.

“Aleks won’t be happy about that,” she said. “He’s obsessed with hunting down Vaughn.”

“Aleksander is the kind of guy who doesn’t deal well with failure,” Pavel mused out loud. Since Katya wasn’t about to return his lighter, he settled for rolling a stick between his fingers. “He’s used to doing his job well.”

“Good.”

“What?”

“I agree with Viktor taking him off from this job,” she admitted. They both leaned their backs against her desk. “I know that order would make him angry, but I’m relieved. Does that make me a bad person?”

“No. It just shows you care about your man,” Pavel said.

The door opened and Aleks stormed out, looking pissed as hell.

“Aleks,” she started, about to go to him.

Aleks held out a hand, making her stop in her footsteps.
