TWENTY-FOUR

Felicity paused her marking, recalling the line of students waiting outside Alex’s office on her way out of the building earlier, five female and one male and it was past six o’clock. No Judy, and she hadn’t seen her up here since their talk. The one time she had seen her she’d been in the library café and had been laughing with two other students. The rumours about Alex in the department had died down. Students sought him out less, and she was satisfied the friendly word of advice had made him reconsider his behaviour. It was a relief that a potentially difficult situation had been avoided, and their even relationship was able to continue. After a bit of light investigation amongst colleagues she’d known for a while and trusted to make sure, she let it go. As long as there were no complaints then she had to assume the gossip was unfounded tittle tattle.

Her mobile was vibrating in her pocket as she let herself into the house. She usually had it on silent when she was at work, since it had gone off in one of her early lectures and she’d been mortified when a burst of the Star Wars theme tune had blasted out making her lose her thread along with the attention of the students. She fished it out, hoping it was Beth. It was her cousin. She’d call her later. She switched the volume back on and left it on the table.

She hadn’t heard from Beth for a few days, and she’d barely seen her at the beach either, as she and Alex had started swimming earlier than usual. Alex had told her Beth needed to start work earlier so that she could have more time free later in the day. Felicity wondered what she did with her time once she’d finished her online tuition. Beth never talked about going out to restaurants or parties. She stayed home while Alex sailed on the sea and Felicity wondered what else he got up to.

Her phone was ringing. Where was it? Felicity shifted sheets of paper and books from her dining room table, the noise close to hand. An exercise book slid to the floor. The phone was buried under the pile of marking she’d just done.

‘Hi, Beth.’ She moved to the comfortable chair with a view out towards the garden. It was dark outside. She’d been marking for hours and lost track of time. Her stomach rumbled.

‘Beth, are you there?’ Beth was on the line but wasn’t speaking; she could hear her breath. ‘Is everything OK?’

‘No, it isn’t.’

‘What’s up? Do you want me to come over?’ She’d not been inside their cottage but she’d walked past it several times, ever puzzling over Beth’s decision to keep their friendship a secret from her partner. She was concerned for Beth; there had to be some reason she was afraid to let Alex know. It wasn’t healthy.

‘No, no, you can’t come here. I don’t know when Alex is coming back.’ Her voice was subdued.
