Chapter 12

Ava

Riley and I had gone back to normal since our talk. If anything, things were even better; she wasn’t talking endlessly about Chuck, good or bad, and she was as smiley and bubbly as ever. With the dark circles under her eyes gone, her hair always done, and her outfits back to being perfectly coordinated, she even looked better.

When she reached her second anniversary of getting sober, I insisted that we spend a day doing whatever she wanted. So I was surprised when I arrived at her house and found just her and Ethan waiting for me. “No Chuck today?” I asked, looking around cautiously.

“Nope, just the three of us!” she chirped, pulling on her cowboy boots.

“Really?”

She smirked. “Why? You want me to go get him?”

“No, no!” Ethan and I both replied in unison, and she doubled over with laughter.

“It’s just…” I exchanged glances with Ethan, who looked as confused as I was. “This is a pretty important day. I’m surprised he’s not here to celebrate with you. He must be proud of you for this, right?”

She shrugged and waved a hand. “Who knows? I don’t care what he thinks anyway. I invited the most important people in the world to me: the two of y’all.” She spread her arms wide as if presenting us to each other. “What would I need him for?”

Riley drove us to her Uncle Lenny’s farm. Lenny, a lean, handsome man in his mid-forties, greeted us all with hugs and allowed us free reign of his property.

With so many acres of perfect pastures, all of us were desperate to go for a ride. We saddled up on three of Lenny’s horses – two bay mares and a gorgeous black stallion – and headed into the early September sunshine. The oppressive heat of summer had faded some, and the sun beating down on my bare thighs echoed the warmth of the beast beneath me.

What started out as a casual ride quickly turned into a series of races. Two of us would set off at a gallop while the third cheered from the sidelines and watched to identify the winner. Soon, we were introducing obstacles, like a downed tree acting as a makeshift hurdle.

I always enjoyed riding, and I always enjoyed spending time with Ethan. But I never imagined it would be so fun to do both at the same time. I figured it would be a lot like leading the youth group together.

But when Ethan was relaxed on horseback, he came alive. His whole body relaxed, his muscles loosening. He laughed and smiled so much easier. He teased me when he won our races. “I’ve been gone for over ten years! Aren’t you supposed to be a riding instructor?” I felt like I was finally getting a glimpse of the Ethan from before the injuries. It only made him more attractive to me.

I hadn’t been able to get him off my mind since our rendezvous in the barn. I spent every day at work just waiting to see him.
