Chapter Nine

As Max watched Jinni leave on the arm of Bently, he could barely hold himself together.

Was he going crazy, or had he seen his brother, Guy, through the window, spying on them?

If it was Guy, he’d have hell to pay for breaking apart that kiss. Dammit, Max’s blood was still raging through his veins in the aftershock of the contact. He’d never held a woman so soft, so suited to his own physical needs.

If only he could convince himself that she was right for him in every other way….

She and Bently were off in the near distance now, her loose, platinum-iced hair lit by the path’s candle lanterns, her figure-hugging dress moving in shifting rainbow patterns with every step she took away from him.

A tap on the shoulder shook Max out of his reverie. He turned around, finding the man in the conductor’s uniform who’d been staring in the window.

Guy.

In a flash of frustration and rage, Max grabbed his brother’s upper arm, escorting him through the depot to the other side, where the volunteers and chef’s assistants had finished their work and deserted the area.

When they were alone, Max hesitated, at a loss as to whether he should welcome Guy home or shove him against the wall in order to apprehend him.

He settled for staring at him, this younger, slightly shorter version of himself with the same blue eyes and dark hair.

“Don’t be mad,” said Guy, holding up his hands, as if to defend himself. He glanced toward Max’s hands, which were now fisted in front of his body.

Max unclenched his fingers, reaching out instead to envelop his brother in a rough hug. Guy couldn’t be a murderer. How could Max even think it?

“You’d better explain what the hell’s going on,” he muttered, realizing that he’d wrapped his arm around Guy’s neck, viselike.

Guy gave a little choking cough, convincing Max to end the hug. The younger man rubbed his throat.

“Before you sentence me, just hear me out. You’re the only option I have left.”

God, he looked so pathetic, dressed in an ill-fitting conductor’s uniform he must’ve filched from the volunteer’s changing room in the back of the depot. Max nodded at the ensemble. “So the gossips were right. You’re creeping around town playing practical jokes. But you’re not quite as invisible as I expected.”

Guy’s eyes widened as he pushed up the bill of the conductor’s hat. “The formula’s worn off, Max. I was invisible, for quite some time, too.” He began pacing back and forth, becoming the absentminded professor. The words tumbled out of his mouth at breakneck speed. “I spent so many hours agonizing over the missing ingredient for my scar healing formula and, wham!, by accident, I found it. Heat, Max. That’s what I was missing.”

Arms crossed over his chest, Max listened to his brother ramble. “Enough, Guy.”

The fugitive jerked to a stop, eyes foggy with the haze of an inventor’s dreams.

There were so many questions to ask, but Max was ashamed because he still didn’t trust the answers he’d get.
